Kad bi svi ljudi u istom trenutku poskočili
Pretpostavimo da se svi ljudi na svetu sakupe na jednom mestu, jedan pored drugog, tako da približno četiri čoveka stane na jedan kvadratni metar. Površina koju bi oni zauzeli bila bi kvadrat dimenzija oko 40 km puta 40 km (od Niša do Leskovca i tako u smeru pod 90 stepeni). Šta bi se desilo kada bi svi oni u jednom trenutku poskočili 34 cm? Ako je broj ljudi šest milijardi, prosečna masa jednog čoveka 50 kg, ubzanje zemljine teže 9,81 m/s2, energija koju bi oni uložili, tj. energija koja bi uzdrmala Zemlju u trenutku njihovog udara o tlo, bila bi: E = mgh = 6⋅109⋅50⋅9,81⋅0,34 = 1012 J.
Uprkos činjenici da je to ogromna energija, to ne bi imalo ozbiljne posledice po našu planetu, s obzirom da je to energija koja odgovara energiji koja se oslobadja pri zemljotresu od 4,8 stepeni po Rihterovoj skali. napomena: Treba napomenuti da uvećanje za 1 stepen na Rihterovoj skali oslobadja 31 puta više energije. Tako, energija koja se oslobadja pri jednom potresu od 7 stepeni (2⋅1015J) je 961 put (31⋅31) veća od one koja je oslobodjena kod potresa od 5 stepeni po Rihterovoj skali.
